The Atmosphoria Difference

Essential Oils

Essential oils are pure plant extracts from aromatic plants. Depending on the plant, their essences are yielded through either steam distillation, cold pressing, solvent extraction, or CO2 extraction. Steam distillation, the most common form of essential oil extraction, takes freshly harvested or dried plant parts and passes steam through them in a still. The resulting steam is then turned back to liquid form in a condensation chamber. The majority of this liquid comes out in water form (this is called a hydrosol) and a small amount comes out as precious and very aromatic concentrated essential oil.

Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, which tells us why they are an optimal way to scent a space. Essential oils are volatile in nature, meaning they naturally disperse and evaporate into the atmosphere--creating an enjoyable experience for anyone around.

When scents reach the olfactory bulb in our brains, they are partially processed through pathways that include the amygdala and limbic system. These structures are central players in how we process memories and emotions--which is why certain smells can instantly transport you to an earlier time, place, and feeling in your life.
